Tri River Pinewood Derby Trophies Awarded

The Tri River District Pinewood Derby Championship Races were held Saturday morning at the Milford Youth Center. Cub Scouts from throughout the district competed in the annual derby, racing their hand-built cars on a 40-foot aluminum track, with laser start and finish. Trophies were awarded for the Cub Scouts who finished in the top positions. Certificates were handed out for those great looking cars, and patches were given out to all who participated.

The event winner was Ryan Foerster of Pack 4 in Westborough. His number 65 car had the best time of 68 competing Cub Scouts, with a speed of 203.8 mph. Westborough Tiger Scout Nicholas Boyd of Pack 100 took first place in the Tiger division, beating out 22 competitors for trophies.

Cub Scout Pack 235 from Stockton Springs held its Pinewood Derby at Stockton Springs Elementary School this past Saturday, February 26, 2011. Pack 235 invited Stockton’s Girl Scout Troop 487 (which comprises Daisy, Brownie, Junior and Cadet Scouts) . The little ones get ready for the run for the pinewood derby trophies.

Colchester Pack 13 held their annual pinewood derby last month. Here are some Webelos I scouts receiving their pinewood derby trophies and participation medals from pack master Lou Musinski. Awards were given to the top three cars in each rank as well as the top three in the pack.

The school cafeteria of Jack Jackter Intermediate was packed with excited boys and their families Friday night as Colchester Cub Scout Pack 109 held its annual Pinewood Derby. Cubmaster Duane McCormick welcomed the crowd as the boys started the battle for the Pinewood Derby Trophies.

Brad Lepore said he has been through seven years of Pinewood derbies with his older sons, Robbie and Kyle.

At the end of the night, Chris placed third for Wolf Scouts, bringing home his first trophy.

Ryan Coupe, 7, was thrilled with how well his car did as it raced down the track.

“I came in second again,” he said, as he jumped up and down as the heat ended.

Each boy was given a Pinewood Derby patch to commemorate his hard work and participation in the event.

Scott Quine, 9, whose car resembled a giant red Lego brick, was thrilled when it won Best in Show.

The Pinewood Derby was held Saturday by Portage’s Pack 70 at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. Cheering on cars from the Tiger Den, from left, are Tigers Stephen Penland, Jack Callen and Logan Fisher with Wolf Den members Emilio Escobedo, Hunter Collins and Grayson Ludwig. The Pack’s top eight overall finishers were: 1. Landon Monteferrante; 2. Seth Reilly; 3. Mitch Amend; 4. Hunter Collins; 5. Alex Schlinkert; 6. Parker Summwalt; 7. Ben Yaskal; 8. Zac Long. Also winning awards were Trent Weier for Best Sportsmanship, Jesse Long for Best Design, and Owen Heitz for Best Fuel Economy. The Pinewood Derby is an annual event for Pack 70 in which Scouts race homemade cars down an indoor track. The Scouts, who get a patch for participating, can earn pinewood derby trophies for placing in the top three in their age group and for placing in the top eight overall.

Pinewood Derby Race a Hit!

Jonathan, 10, was grand champion of the Cub Scout Pack 731 2011 Pinewood Derby at Crofton Elementary School on Saturday.

The derby included 102 cars made by Scouts in first through fifth grades, said Liz Hostetler, committee chairwoman for Pack 731.

Each participant received an official Boy Scouts of America Grand Prix Pinewood Derby kit in November and had to follow BSA rules – which included specifications for height, weight, width and appearance — to build their car, she said.

Organizers said that this was a very competitive race as the boys’ cars achieved the fastest speeds ever recorded in their pack.

• Top racers at Saturday’s Pack 731 2011 Pinewood Derby were all constructed by Webelos-II scouts::

1. Jonathan Dolbeck, 221.4 mph

2. Ryan Underwood, 221.0 mph

3. Harrison Platts, 220.4 mph

The top finishers along with any other interested scouts from Pack 731 are encouraged to enter the Capitol District 2011 Pinewood Derby scheduled for Saturday February 5th at Annapolis Westfield Mall. Registration is held the morning of the race from 9:00 to 11:30 AM with races starting at 12:00 PM.

What is the Pinewood Derby?

The pinewood derby is a racing event for cub scouts. Children with the help of their parents build their own cars for the pinewood derby race. The cars usually are built from pinewood derby car kits. These kits consist of a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles. The pinewood derby has been growing in popularity since the conception in 1953. The pinewood derby was selected as part of “America’s 100 Best” in 2006 as “a celebrated rite of spring” by Reader’s Digest. In the 1980s, the design of the block was changed from a cutout block, consistent with a 1940’s style front-engine Indy 500 car, to a solid block. The tires were also changed from narrow, hard plastic, to wider “slicks”.

The track is wooden and usually has two to six lanes that slope down to the ground. Tracks may be owned by the Cub Scout pack or rented. The race is run in heats, giving every car the chance to run on each lane.

Pinewood Derby Awards

The first, second, and third place winners usually receive ribbons, medals or trophies.

Pinewood Derby Trophies have been growing in popularity and are a huge hit with the kids. Some packs also give awards based of car design. The first place race winners get to advance to the district level, then each of the district-wide race winners get to race each other from across the entire council. The pinewood derby is really a good time for all.

Pinewood Spagetti Dinner

Bloomfield Cub Scout Pack 23 invites the community to its Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 293 West Passaic Ave., Bloomfield. Tickets are $25 for families of four, $10 for individual adults and $5 for children age 5 to 12. Children under age 4 attend free with purchase of an individual or family ticket.

Dinner proceeds go to the purchase of pinewood derby racing equipment. Pack 23 is also accepting donations.

Scouts getting ready for Pinewood Derby Trophy

All over Yuma County, Cub Scouts of all ages are planning and building this season’s Pinewood Derby cars.

Their excitement of hand-crafting an original race car leads up to the Pinewood Derby Race Day on Saturday at Fisher Chevrolet on 32nd Street. The race is for boys from first to fifth grade.

The race begins at 6 p.m. There will also be an open Fun Race during intermission that is open to all ages.

Spectators are asked to bring their own chairs. Refreshments will be available.
